‘We simply know pumps better’

Hot Water Circulation & Boosting

What is the best way to obtain immediate hot water from the tap? Hot water recirculation pumps are a convenient and simple way to ensure that you get hot water when you want and need it the most. These systems pump hot water through your hot water pipes and back to the water heater through either a dedicated line or through the cold water line.

By adding a circulator pump and constantly circulating a small amount of hot water through the pipes from the heater to the farthest fixture and back to the heater, the water in the pipes is always hot, reducing water wastage when a tap is opened.

What are the benefits?

The main function of a circulating water pump is to reduce water wastage and increase comfort. It is also a very fast method of heating water. Saving you time and saving water, as a precious natural resource, are key outcomes of using a circulation pump for water heating.

Uncontrolled pumps are normally used on the home front, given the relatively small flow variation but this depends on the size of the system. In larger systems, controlled pumps could be more advantageous to allow adjustment of the flow when starting the system and to be able to control the temperature.

How does a water heater circulation pump work?

A circulation pump (sometimes referred to as a recirculation pump) circulates fluid in a closed circuit with the intent of ensuring hot water is always available close to the consumption point. Consequently, water circulation pumps are commonly used to circulate the water in hydronic heating or cooling systems.

The circulator can operate all the time or can be controlled via a time clock or thermostat. More advanced control systems can be used where a switch or motion sensor located near each fixture activates an energy-efficient circulation pump. The circulation pump houses a temperature sensor and a check valve that prevents water from entering the return line. The pump moves ambient temperature water sitting in the line back to the water heater.
